Market Match is paying off in a big way in 2012. Under the program, a CalFresh recipient who uses an EBT card to purchase at least $10 in tokens to shop at a farmers’ market, receives an extra $5 in tokens, good only for fresh fruits and vegetables. So far in 2012, the program has led 1,010 new CalFresh shoppers to a farmers’ market and has put over $22,800 worth of fresh fruits and vegetables onto the tables of low-income families.
Allen Moy, Executive Director of Fresh Approach says “Market Match helps low-income families stretch their food dollars while allowing them to access fresher, tastier and healthier food. And as all Market Match funds are spent with California farmers they help to support and sustain our state economy.” The program is operated by Fresh Approach and PCFMA with support from Roots of Change, through a grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture; and the generosity of the Wholesome Wave Foundation; and Blue Shield of California. Cookin' the Market - with Chef Anna Buss
The pear has been around for ages, even before any written text. When choosing a pear to eat check the neck to see if it's tender to the touch. The stem should come off easily. Pears will bruise easily so make sure you handle them with care. When cutting them make sure to serve immediately, or add a little lemon and sugar to prevent them from browning too quickly. The sweetness of pears goes great in salads of bitter greens, nuts, and your favorite blue cheese. You can also poach them in wine or bake them into a tart for your favorite dessert!
The first pear you buy this season, eat raw with your eyes closed and taste all of the flavors it has to offer. Then start adding it into your cooking repertoire. Lastly, eat them while they are in season to take advantage of the abundance of vitamins and minerals pears have to offer!
