Purpose
This bulletin publicizes the just-past National Crime Victims' Rights Week. What a compassionate nation we have on our hands! Lucky us!
The bulletin also tries to give victims, at least some of the specific and general (for we are ALL victims) information available to help succor and restore them to wholeness, as far as is humanly possible.
Background
I sincerely regret missing this event, of which I was unaware, in time to bring it to your attention, when it should have been. This week's national honors to our police services raised the matter into my view, for the first time.
This and all other relevant police and criminal matters will be the subject of the "CIVIC MENTOR / All levels / POLICE SERVICES" website, under construction -- so we won't overlook or forget, again -- ever!
David Nelson
The Literature
1. From a Bulletin on PPD Facebook Page (based on a NIXLE Alert)
This week is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW.) Communities throughout the country observe NCVRW by promoting victims’ rights and honoring crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf. In support of this great effort, Pittsburg [California] Police personnel have been authorized to wear a “Victims’ Rights Week 2014” ribbon on their uniforms. More information about NCVRW can be found at the Office of Justice Programs website: http://ovc.ncjrs.gov/ncvrw/.

The week is marked by an award ceremony held in Washington, D.C., in which individuals and organizations that demonstrate outstanding service in supporting victims and victim services are recognized. The exact date of the observance varies year to year, but it is always in the month of April.
Established by Ronald Reagan in 1981 as a part of an expanding initiative to provide for victims of crimes (later manifested in Executive Order 12360, signed in 1982, which established the President's Task Force on Victims of Crime), Crime Victims' Rights Week is sponsored by the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC). Several states and localities conduct local events to mark the week, as do private victim rights organizations like the National Organization for Victim Assistance [more...]

“Forgiveness has nothing to do with absolving a criminal of his crime. It has everything to do with relieving oneself of the burden of being a victim -- letting go of the pain and transforming oneself from victim to survivor.” ― C.R. Strahan
