PITTSBURG -- After a successful comedy show last month, the newly remodeled California Theatre is letting the good times roll with another show starring Bay Area favorite Jeff Applebaum and friends.
Saturday's show will be the second in a series of monthly comedy events that began in August, and will be another opportunity for patrons to visit the recently revamped 94-year-old theater, which was recently restored to the tune of $7.6 million. "The last event was a definite success and a lot fun," said Cystal Watts, the theater's manager. "We were very pleased with the turnout and hope it will grow."
The theater is fast becoming a draw for people to visit Old Town Pittsburg, and restaurants such as Hall of Fame are offering deals for show-goers. The monthly shows are fulfilling a demand for more comedy in the area, according to Watts, and are a great addition to the theater's menu, which includes live music, performances and movie screenings.
While the theater had its official grand opening in January 2013, there are still plans to raise funds to renovate the balcony. Upon completion, more seats will be added, allowing for bigger acts to be booked.
"I haven't been to the theater since the changes, but I got a haircut and lost weight, so I've been remodeled, too," Jeff Applebaum said. "It's been a long time since I've been to Pittsburg without the 'h'," Applebaum joked. "The show will be a nice refresher."
Originally from New York, Applebaum has lived in California for over 25 years. He made his national TV debut on the "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson", has performed across the country, and is a frequent guest on KGO radio.
While the funnyman has shared the stage with names like Richard Lewis, Dana Carvey and the late Robin Williams, Applebaum came from humble beginnings. "I always had a vision of being a comedian since junior high," said Applebaum. "Nothing was funny when I started, and in New York you will get beat up less or more depending on material."
Set to perform with him are Joe Nguyen, Dan Dainan and Rocky Cologne.
"I wanted to bring the audience people from different places and different mindsets; we all laugh and have fun together," Applebaum said. "There is a little bit for everyone."
