HOW THE PITTSBURG SENIOR CENTER IS BEING USED!!

Posted:  7 Feb 13

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
as you enter your senior years in and around Pittsburg...

Here is the Jan/Feb/Mar newsletter
for the "Pittsburg 50+ Senior Club."

Here are some newsletter highlights
  • Newly-elected club President, B.Z. Brisjar, lays out his plans for "continuing the spirit of charity (love) for which our club is known."  Lots of VERY, VERY GENEROUS scholarships were given last year.
  • Pittsburg Recreation Coordinator, Joy Walker, revealed some of the variety of special things to unfold during 2013 at the City's wonderful Senior Center, where the Club makes its home.
  • The Editor, Annette Jenkins, reported on the Club's Reno adventure and the Halloween "Monster Mash" festivities -- both in October.  She is the one who created this lovely newletter.
  • The newsletter goes on to report other goings-on of note and ends with an application form and an invitation to join in on all the fun and rewarding activities for members and those they are trying to serve.
  • Note: To print the "application form," click the button called "Scribd" in the lower left corner of the embedded frame.  This takes you to the hosting service control-panel page.  On the lower right of that page is a section to "download and print this document."  Save it as a PDF, open it, and print the last page.  Slick as glass.

the Senior Center is being used, Click Here

Here is the newsletter.
To enjoy a full-page view, please click the button in the bottom right of the embedded frame.  May take a few minutes to load ... your patience will be repaid in full.

MAY IS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH!

Posted:  12 May 13
Ref:  USA.gov blog, (click here)

During "Older Americans Month" and throughout the year, we urge Americans to appreciate and celebrate the many contributions of older individuals to our society.

More than 9 million American seniors (ages 65 and older) are veterans of the armed forces and approximately 16% are in the labor force. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, about 1 in 3 volunteers is 55 years or older.

To older Americans: thank you for making a positive difference in our nation and in our communities!

AGING: ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

Dear Readers,

Perhaps you have aging parents or friends who are undergoing this difficult life passage.  Perhaps you just want to be a little more aware of what all the fuss is about -- this disease is often discussed over the course of the months, years, decades.  Perhaps you're looking for a cause you want to help advance.

Here are three things that might give you a quick idea, so that life doesn't spring a nasty surprise on you, for which you are unprepared: (1) A Google search on the subject; (2) A Wikipedia discussion; (3) The below message from the Alzheimer's Association.

Quick Scan Time:  Approximately 5 minutes

Adding up to success during World Alzheimer’s Month

Dear Friend,
In September, we asked you to add your voice to the millions of people across the globe raising awareness during World Alzheimer’s Month – and we’re happy to report that your efforts equaled great success! On behalf of the 35 million people living with dementia worldwide, thank you.
Words are not enough to show the power of your contributions – so we hope these numbers
will say it all:
  • On Sept. 21, Alzheimer's Action Day, the Obama Administration congratulated the Alzheimer's Association on its "important efforts" via the White House blog.
  • More than 30 members of Congress showed their commitment to ending Alzheimer's by participating in World Alzheimer's Month.
  • National television personalities and celebrity Champions, including  Anderson Cooper and Maria Shriver,  joined us in going purple on Alzheimer's Action Day.
  • The Alzheimer's Association worked with eBay to host  celebrity auctions - a guitar signed by musician Glen Campbell, who is living with Alzheimer's and a star-studded experience at Hilarity for Charity hosted by Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller.
  • We saw triple the normal action on Facebook as thousands of constituents turned their profile pictures purple with the "END ALZ" graphic.
  • More than 600,000 people from 185 countries left 530 comments on the World Alzheimer's Month Web page, inspiring us the Alzheimer's community with their words.
  • More than 32,000 people donated to the World Alzheimer's Month Challenge raising $1.1 million and counting!
We know there are countless other efforts that can’t be quantified. Together, you raised awareness of the stigma around Alzheimer’s disease, speaking up bravely about the issues people with this disease and their caregivers face. You held fundraisers at offices, schools and places of worship. You wore purple — and told people why.
With your help, we’re subtracting the stigma around Alzheimer’s, multiplying the level of awareness and dividing fear of this disease. Thank you for your efforts during World Alzheimer’s Month and throughout the year, which add up to a better world for those facing Alzheimer’s disease.
Gratefully,
Angela Geiger
