Updating Our Terms and Policies: Helping You Understand How Facebook Works and How to Control Your Information

Over the past year, we’ve introduced new features and controls to help you get more out of Facebook, and listened to people who have asked us to better explain how we get and use information.

Now, with Privacy Basics, you'll get tips and a how-to guide for taking charge of your experience on Facebook. We're also updating our terms, data policy and cookies policy to reflect new features we've been working on and to make them easy to understand.

These updates take effect on January 1, 2015. As always, we welcome your feedbackabout our policies.

Privacy Basics

Privacy Basics offers interactive guides to answer the most commonly asked questions about how you can control your information on Facebook. For example, you can learn about untagging, unfriending, blocking and how to choose an audience for each of your posts. This information is available in 36 languages.

Along with our privacy checkup, reminder for people posting publicly and simplifiedaudience selectors, Privacy Basics is the latest step we've taken to help you make sure you're sharing with the people you want.

Helping you get more out of Facebook

Every day, people use our apps and services to connect with the people, places and things they care about. The updates to our policies reflect the new products we've been working on to improve your Facebook experience. They also explain how our services work in a way that's easier to understand. Here are some highlights:

Discover what's going on around you: We’re updating our policies to explain how we get location information depending on the features you decide to use. Millions of people check into their favorite places and use optional features like Nearby Friends (currently only available in some regions). We're working on ways to show you the most relevant information based on where you are and what your friends are up to. For example, in the future, if you decide to share where you are, you might see menus from restaurants nearby or updates from friends in the area.

Make purchases more convenient: In some regions, we're testing a Buy button that helps people discover and purchase products without leaving Facebook. We're also working on new ways to make transactions even more convenient.

Find information about privacy on Facebook at the moment you need it: To make them more accessible, we moved tips and suggestions to Privacy Basics. Our data policy is shorter and clearer, making it easier to read.

Understand how we use the information we receive: For example, understanding battery and signal strength helps make sure our apps work well on your device. We ask for permission to use your phone's location when we offer optional features like check-ins or adding your location to posts.

Get to know how the family of Facebook companies and apps work together: Over the past few years, Facebook has grown and we want to make sure you know about ourfamily of companies, apps and services. We use the information we collect to improve your experience. For example, if you're locked out of your Instagram account, you can use your Facebook information to recover your password. Nothing in our updates changes the commitments that Instagram, WhatsApp and other companies have made to protect your information and your privacy.

Your information and advertising: People sometimes ask how their information is shared with advertisers. Nothing is changing with these updates—we help advertisers reach people with relevant ads without telling them who you are. Learn more about adsand how you can control the ads you see.

Giving you more control over ads

We've heard from some of you that it can be difficult to control the types of ads you see if you use multiple devices and browsers. In the past, if you opted out of certain kinds of advertising on your laptop, that choice may not have been applied for ads on your phone. We know that many people use more than one phone, tablet or browser to access Facebook, so it should be easy for you to make a single choice that applies across all of your devices.

That's why Facebook respects the choices you make about the ads you see, across every device. You can opt out of seeing ads on Facebook based on the apps and sites you use through the Digital Advertising Alliance. You can also opt out using controls on iOS and Android. When you tell us you don't want to see these types of ads, your decision automatically applies to every device you use to access Facebook. Also, we're now makingad preferences available in additional countries, beginning with Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland and the UK.

We hope these updates improve your experience. Protecting people's information and providing meaningful privacy controls are at the core of everything we do, and we believe these announcements are an important step.

BAY AREA NEWS GROUP (BANG) Pages on Facebook (#2)

Want a superb, easy link into the "heart-beat" of many San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA) communities -- and the world, at large?

1. Purpose

To help publicize useful links into the array of informational products and services offered to the public by the Bay Area News Group (BANG) -- which are instantly available on Facebook.

This bulletin is an accumulator to gather together, acquire, and deliver an increasing number of useful information-fragments. As more information on this topic comes to hand, I will reflect it here (opportunity permitting) and indicate the change by adding a revision number in the very title of this bulletin -- so you can tell whether something significant has changed since your last visit.

2. Background

This morning, I "discovered" the BANG Facebook page and realized that it contains a wealth of static and dynamic information which could prove invaluable to those interested in SF Bay Area affairs. Theirs is another human contribution well worth celebrating and incorporating into the life-routine.

Society is still learning what to make of this glorious "Internet Revolution" -- and is doing a great job of figuring it out. Here is more proof.

These were not on the list, but I've taken the liberty of adding them:

West County Times -- The West County Times is a Bay Area News Group publication that covers West Contra Costa County in California, including the cities of Richmond, El Cerrito, Pinole, San Pablo, Crockett, El Sobrante and Hercules.
Pittsburg-Bay Point News -- "The Pittsburg News is inserted into the East County Times for subscribers. [Also] Free copies [in print] can be found at various locations in Pittsburg and at the Bay Point BART station." [check inside the "newspaper street-boxes" -- Fridays, I think -- at places like near the entrance to Country Waffles on Atlantic Ave, Pittsburg]

4. Some Interesting Features about these pages

In no way do I have the time nor resources to examine many of my "discoveries" in depth -- yet. No hope of always discerning useful patterns, immediately. I'll tell you some of what I've found, so far (so you won't have to wait) but with no sure knowledge in me that the findings are consistent throughout all their offerings -- but might be. You'll have to help me and discover those yourselves. But, at least you're aware of what I have learned, so far, and what may also be true elsewhere:

4.1 In the "Photo" section of the page -- images that are replicas of the printed pages. Click them and you get a closer look at the front pages -- which tells you what they covered, which you can then investigate further, if you desire. FURTHERMORE, on mouse-click, not only do you get a closer view, you get a bullet-list of the edition's high-points! FANTASTIC!!

4.2 The "Timeline" or "News Feed" -- which is where you instantly see the running accumulation of comments (theirs and ours) about their published articles -- newest comment on top. As you scan down the page, like scanning a magazine -- you will see stories they wish to call to our attention. When you click these, you are taken to the actual stories, themselves. A very efficient way to quickly see what is going on and what needs to be examined more deeply.

NOT ONLY THAT -- YOU CAN ENGAGE IN A DISCUSSION OF THE TOPIC, RIGHT THERE (what a splendid chance to communicate with our neighbors, throughout the SFBA -- and even the world!)

4.3 Free printed inserts -- which are exact duplicates of a community's section as contained in the main printed newspaper -- may be offered to other communities, besides Pittsburg/Bay Point (see para 3., above).

Odds and Ends passing through My Facebook (#2)

This is to share some things I thought you might enjoy -- and to conduct an experiment. There are six items, below, so far. I expect to keep adding here, until I discover how many additions one blog-post can handle before it become too unwieldy to add any more.

This also keeps the accumulation of "odds and ends" handy, while I sort out better ways to deliver this information to you. Like most things, what I learn here will transfer to other parts of the Civic Mentor project to help advance the whole thing. I am seeking methods, in light of fast-changing technology and human conditions. (I couldn't justify diverting so much energy to this aspect of life, at this particular moment, otherwise)

Now, here's a statement which rings with truth and offers us, I believe, a seed worth planting and nurturing -- deep down in the foundations of our views on the meaning and opportunity-costs of the death-event -- where it can influence how we approach and handle the second most profound aspect of our existence. HELP: Sometimes, it's good to shrink a city, to make it village-like *******************

0629 1140 -- PLEASE NOTE: I'm not worried about any slow start in this or any other related initiatives. These things, quite reasonably, take time, promotion, and patient persistence to take hold -- for there are many hidden dimensions involved. Plus, there needs to be an orderly system-framework for this Facebook component to plug into -- complete with: an easy interface to aid perspective and navigation; forums for deeper side-discussions of the issues; a whole panoply of useful web objects, integrated logically -- and all under construction. I believe it's in the nature of my "overall master project" to do much of the work under the public eye -- therefore, much of what I present to you can be likened to a "rough draft," on the way to a smooth one. However, the following new feature is here and ready to use, as is, whenever you wish -- it's going to be great getting to know one another.

I am pleased to announce the creation of a Facebook page for YOU and the Pittsburg City-Journal (PCJ), called "MENTOR / City of Pittsburg, CA." The whole idea is that the easier it is to talk and think together, the more likely we will be to do so.

FUNCTIONS OF THE NEW FACEBOOK PAGE

The New Facebook Page, "MENTOR / Pittsburg, CA," hopes to serve as:

A PUBLIC THINKING SPACE -- A City-wide forum and public rendezvous and "electronic hang out," for all sorts of reasons -- including getting to know one another, so as to better discover the good things we can do together -- things which would be IMPOSSIBLE to do without this kind of knowledge and friendly interaction
An easy way to ask questions and provide answers -- almost in real time -- so immediate, yet, not necessarily hurried
A place for fellow residents to exchange information and unlock ideas, in order to better (1) identify and neutralize hazards and (2) create opportunities
A social networking tool that connects us into one great common mind and "sense of community and belonging," and helps to focus and intensify the same, for common causes, of all sorts.
BASED UPON WHAT IS LEARNED HERE, FUTURE SYSTEMS CAN (AND WILL) BE DESIGNED TO MAKE THE WHOLE COMMUNICATION PROCESS EVEN EASIER. THIS IS A CRUCIAL PRELIMINARY.
A place to expand and expound upon significant announcements
Another place to recognize and appreciate civic accomplishments, progress, and concerns.
IN OTHER WORDS: a place for individual minds and souls to meet -- and do big and little things -- together with other minds -- all sharing a common territory -- and vitally concerned with many of the very same considerations

Getting to know one another, so as to turn our City into an even more secure, prosperous, and happy village is an incredibly useful thing to do.

THE INTERNET REVOLUTION CHANGES EVERYTHING. SOCIETY IS STILL DISCOVERING ALL THE GOOD THINGS TO DO WITH THIS WORLD-CHANGING ACHIEVEMENT!!

EXPLANATION

1. In NO WAY is this meant to compete with all the marvelous Facebook sites out there. Rather, it is to help promote them and increase their chances for success. For they are serving some human need. And that's well worth supporting, if it's uplifting.

2. And it is a way FOR ANYONE to talk about things that might not be appropriate to discuss elsewhere -- or to reiterate things that need to be said, everywhere.

3. It's another way to tell people about all the other pages -- but not just Facebook pages. This is to raise awareness of ANY OTHER THING relevant to the well-being of the people of this most fortunate City -- and to the larger world our existence serves.

4. It's a place to put and ponder and discuss information, so as to not crowd out other Facebook sites and distort their missions.

SETTING A TONE

5. HERE, YOU ARE WELCOME TO SAY ANY RESPECTFUL, CONSTRUCTIVE, AND KIND THING YOU PLEASE -- but, sorry, nothing else.

6. And, please do not worry, overly, about grammar, typos, spelling, punctuation, or logical errors (although "due care for CLARITY" is much appreciated -- WRITE FOR THE READER RATHER THAN FOR THE WRITER -- as it's so easy to be misunderstood or to befuddle a conversation and throw it out of whack, by the way we handle words) --

MUCH OF THAT (but not all) IS JUST PACKAGING
(which exposure, observation, and practice will cure, where it needs curing).

We want and need the keys to wisdom contained in your every serious utterance
-- and the enjoyment of your non-serious ones --
AND SHOULDN'T BE DENIED, ON ACCOUNT OF TECHNICALITIES.

7. For what it's worth: I can't resist inserting one of President Lincoln's favorite old quotes from the bible: "Judge not, lest ye be judged." Not everyone has the time, experiences, opportunity, will, or ability to master everything. (AND tired eyes or excited haste can hide errors, to be detected only after pressing "send"). Writing skill is just one skill -- though, perhaps, another one of humankind's greatest advantages -- but it's still one skill among many skills needed by the species. No one can master them all, in one life-span -- though, we need not overly limit ourselves; circumstance will do that without our "help."

I'm sorry if the foregoing embarrasses anyone, but I know this to be a distracting issue for many who haven't had a chance to work out a more accommodating point of view on the subject. Judgmentalism (or even the feeling of being harshly judged by others) would most certainly detract, unnecessarily, from the beneficial potential of this Facebook service offering
-- and it's fullest possible enjoyment; hence, is worth the risk of speaking about it, frankly.

EVEN WORSE, IT COULD MEAN DENIAL AND WASTE OF SOME

CRUCIAL INFORMATION FRAGMENT OR VITAL LESSON

8. Any group of people who can TALK together easily and freely can THINK together more fully and WORK OUT useful things to do together. It's usually a helpful advantage to have LOTS of viewpoints available, when considering important human topics. It could tip the scales. "In unity, there is strength."

WE are THE people

and, by nature, people tend to be as good as their circumstances enable and allow!

To change self, or anyone else, change the circumstances.

Our human natures will normally take care of the rest.

EXTRA RATIONALE

The whole idea is	that the easier it is to talk and think together, the more likely we will be to do so.
Everyone has so much good to bring to the table	We all contain the seeds of greatness. The trick is to get at it, unlock it, share it, combine it, develop it -- and do wondrous things never thought possible before -- simply because we never had the right tools before -- or hadn't yet noticed that they were there, merely waiting to be picked up and used.
Why live with things as they are, when they could be made so much better?	Why settle for less, when we can so easily create more and more good things -- virtually without limit? Humans have always combined to meet common challenges. But, with large collections of humans, like cities, time and distance and great numbers of us have always been barriers to be overcome. But much less so now. Thankfully, the changing times are breaking up those barriers -- as only dreamed of, before.
Someone, just next door or on the other side of town or the county or even the world,	could hold the very keys we're looking for (or didn't even know to look for) -- to doors previously locked or hidden away -- who would have gladly shared them, had we known but to ask, watch, listen -- using the convenient tools now available to us.
What a sad waste to pass these by, never realizing what we're losing out on	-- when the right set of words and ideas were well within our easy grasp. Life is so full of surprises and opportunities -- and hazards -- best dealt with, with others. The more the merrier.
Who says we can't change almost anything for the better,	if we get our heads and hearts together, so as to maximize our power to do the big and little things, with style -- sometimes, to almost instant good effect? We're in this together. May as well make the most of it, while we can. Life is often stingy about second chances -- though, thankfully, it's getting much better, every day.
The choice is easy.	Leave things as they are or seize better opportunities, just as soon as we can see that that's what they are.
