Adult Education, Community Band, & Small World Park

DID YOU KNOW WE HAVE A COMMUNITY BAND?

What a lucky thing that Greg Enholm, Library Commissioner for our part of the County, forwarded for PCJ publication, the below video of our Pittsburg Community Band, led by Band Director Diane Klaczynski, performing in Small World Park, back in 2006.

During the Pittsburg Mayor's Ice Cream Social held at Small World Park in 2006,
the Pittsburg Community Band performed.

Not only was the performance by the Pittsburg Community Band pleasing, and the setting perfect, I also became aware of something I had missed -- the existence of the band at all.  I'm still learning things, every day, about our home town.  Surely, I'll run out of "new" things to discover at some point or the other?

After looking into it a little further, I learned from Jack Kane, Vice Principal, Pittsburg Adult Education Center, that enrollment with the band is done as part of course registration with the Center.  Registration will begin there on 27 August.  Mr. Kane advises that the course catalog will be publicly available in the very near future.

Here is the website for the Adult Education Center.  When the coming season's schedule becomes available, we'll try to let you know.

This may be an opportunity for musicians, former musicians, and aspiring ones to have a good time entertaining the community -- while increasing the all-important opportunities for us all to socialize together.  It looks like fun and they sound great!

A CLOSER LOOK: Small World Park - Train Ride

As our City Manager, Joe Sbranti, said at a recent neighborhood improvement team meeting: "If you haven't been to Small World Park, you really need to see it.  It's a beautiful, fantastic place for all ages to enjoy."  If you can not make it before August, you can have a good look if you attend the "National Night Out," on behalf of the Police Department (a great time, well-spent) -- more on this, later.

The Library Commissioner for our section of the County (District 5), Greg Enholm, provided the following video of the Small World Train Ride.  He was concerned about it's quality, as it was taken with an analog camcorder -- which has since been upgraded to digital.  (I think it's just fine, Greg.)  We hope you will enjoy this tiny glimpse at just one of the features of this fine oasis in our midst.

Note:  Mr. Enholm Represents the Libraries in Antioch, Bay Point, Crockett, Hercules, Martinez, Pittsburg, and Rodeo -- and will be sharing photos, videos and other information of interest to us in future articles.

City of Pittsburg Invites the Community to a Day of Eco-Friendly Fun and Entertainment.
The City of Pittsburg will host this year's Green Footprint Festival on Thursday, June 14th in Small World Park. The Festival will feature an interactive performance show by EarthCapades Environmental Vaudeville at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, kids' crafts with reused materials by East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse, and interactive kids' activities throughout the park with many green community organizations. The park will be filled with educational exhibits for both kids and adults, highlighting topics like recycling, saving energy and water, and alternative transportation. Kids who wish to earn special door prizes will receive an event "passport" to get stamped at participating booths.

PARENTS! Relief is at hand! SUMMER CAMP!

Dear Readers,

This came to my attention from two directions: (1) I found a flyer at "Country Waffles" restaurant, this morning (6/3/Sun) and (2) Mayor Ben Johnson highlighted it on his Facebook page.

This looks as if it has the makings for a grand summer for the little (and not so little) ones.  It serves K-12.  Here is the STS Academy website for a closer look.  A fine-looking site.

DCN

0604 1020 UPDATE -- Just talked with the Executive Director of the Academy, Jim Craft.  There was a "rumor" that "June 1" was the deadline to apply.  NOT SO.  They offer 230 scholarships and have 400 general openings, of which about 100 are filled. While all seats are likely to become filled, eventually, you STILL have time to plant a great memory in the brains of the "little (and not so little) ones" -- if you don't delay too long.  (By the way, the "June 1" thing had to do with closing the period where certain schools had preference to apply ahead of others -- we're still good to go).  I also learned that the Academy has a staff of around 100.
