I just received this helpful reminder by email subscription, from the "Gettysburg Flag Works" (click here to see) -- a personal favorite of mine. It's main message is the title of this bulletin.
Naturally, these are experts on many of the national customs we cherish and have a duty to pass along the generations, intact, for as long as there is an America.
Have a wonderful day, tomorrow -- I'm sure that most of us will stop and reflect on its significance -- and I hope that all will. That simple act is more nourishment for our souls and another power-boost for our resolve to hold our magnificent nation up in all due honor.
We can go a long way with such an internal force as knowing and appreciating our belonging to something truly greater than ourselves -- a force for human good and, I think, humankind's crown jewel (though I suppose most nations feel that way about themselves -- yet, I think we can make a mighty strong case for ourselves).

Oh, and just a little anecdote -- just because it relates to and supports the topic -- and might add some useful clarity as to where this Civic Mentor thing is coming from -- and how deeply-rooted it is -- which is far better that you know about me, than not:
I watch the flag rules like a hawk -- and fortunately, since I live right under a bright City streetlight, I can fly my ol' glory, 24/7 -- without violating the law which requires a flag flying all night, to be properly illuminated -- so I never have to worry until it starts looking tattered or unclean -- and needs to be replaced by a brand spanking new one -- or when the much larger "holiday" colors are raised -- or when it needs to be half-staffed. (By the way, there is a proper way to dispose of worn-out national ensigns -- a couple of mouse-clicks away from here)
It gives me a big boost, every single time I look at it -- very, very often -- and I also often shudder, as I gaze at it, to think of a world where the United States ceased to exist -- as nearly happened during our Great Civil War. We must never take our great good national fortune for granted -- never -- everything in this life has an expiration date -- just life being life.

Meet the Gettysburg Veteran That Received the Medal of Honor This Week:
On Thursday afternoon, President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant Alonzo H. Cushing for his heroic acts of bravery while serving as an artillery commander during the Civil War.
Typically, the Medal of Honor is awarded within a few years of the action, but as the President noted, "sometimes even the most extraordinary stories can get lost in the passage of time."
"For this American family, this story isn’t some piece of obscure history -- it is an integral part of who they are," he said. "Our whole nation shares their pride, and celebrates what this story says about who we are."

East Contra Costa celebrates Veterans Day

Every year on Nov. 11, Veterans Day, communities across the nation come out to show the their support. Through benefit concerts, ceremonies, speakers and parades people recognize veterans, to thank them for their service and to let them know they are supported and appreciated.
Throughout East County, several events have been scheduled, beginning with concerts in Brentwood and Pittsburg on Saturday, leading into Nov. 11 ceremonies in Antioch and Oakley, and concluding with the screening of a documentary in Antioch.
[1.] Pittsburg's California Theatre will begin the festivities at 5 p.m. on Saturday with 2014 featuring Hot For Teacher & Alan Iglesias and Crossfire. Presented by the Veterans Employment Committee of Contra Costa County, this will be the group's second annual VETJAM concert featuring classic rock and Texas blues.
Hot for Teacher will fill the hall with the grooving, unforgettable music of Van Halen while Alan Iglesias will present Stevie Ray Vaughn at his best with his signature sound, guitars and attitude.
[2.] The Brentwood Concert Band also will be honoring veterans with a musical salute on Saturday at the Brentwood Community Center, 35 Oak St. Under the direction of Carey Hurst and Susan Stuart, the band will perform selections, including "The Star Spangled Banner," "First Suite for Military Band" by Host, "American Civil War Fantasy" by Bilik and several others.
A special guest for the event is the Diablo Regional Concert Band from Martinez, under the direction of Cora Martens, and the Brentwood Flute Choir, under the direction of Carey Hurst, will also perform.
[3.] On Veterans Day, Antioch begins the celebrations at the Antioch Marina with the flyby and arrival of a Huey helicopter, allowing for photo-ops for those who attend the ceremonies, honoring veterans of yesterday and today.
After the presentation of the flags, guest Speaker Clark Strickland, a World War II veteran, will take the podium.
Nonprofit organizations that serve the veterans community will set up at booths and hand out free materials at the marina.
After the ceremonies, the parade, composed of all manner of community entries, will begin. Included in the parade will be marching bands from Deer Valley and Antioch high schools, youth organizations, military vehicles, a veterans motorcycle organization, boy scouts, girl scouts, floats, classic car clubs, and an equestrian riding group.
[4.] Also on Tuesday, the city of Oakley will be honoring all who served with its Third Annual Veterans Day Ceremony. The program includes music, the Presentation of Colors and an opening invocation. Winners of the Military 1 Hero Essay Contest will read their submissions; there will be a three-volley salute, taps and a closing benediction.
Keynote speaker for the event will be former Marine Corps Sgt. Nathan Johnson who served in Pakistan and Iraq during Operation Enduring Freedom and is now a service officer for the Contra Costa County Veterans Service Office.
Another important part of the Observance Ceremony will be the unveiling and ribbon cutting of the Veterans Memorial, a blue granite base flying the American flag surrounded by five red granite square columns, representing the five branches of the U.S. military.
[5.] The United Veteran's Council of Pittsburg will begin its Veterans Day Ceremony on Nov. 11, with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Pittsburg Kiwanis Club.
Following the breakfast, the ceremony will include several speakers and the placing of wreaths. Pittsburg's United Veteran's Council Honor Guard will present a gun salute and play taps.
[6.] In honor of veterans on Veterans Day, El Campanil Theatre in Antioch will be screening "Chosin," a documentary film that features Korean War veterans who fought in the Chosin Reservoir Campaign, one of most savage and highly decorated battles in American history. Sponsored by the Contra Costa County Library, the film will be followed by a discussion session.
Josie Monaghan of East County Veterans urges the community to come out for these events.
"It's important to honor our veterans on a day that's especially set for them," she said. "This way the community can come out and say thank you for your service and thank you for everything, for stepping up to do what you do."

VETERANS DAY, 11/11/12/SUN, EVENTS, Local and Nation-wide

Purpose
To publicize relevant links and information for local and national Veterans Day observances
Rationale
I often proudly wear my black ball cap with the words "U.S. Coast Guard" and "Viet Nam Vet," blazoned in gold. It's a great conversation starter and way to find old comrades.
And, people often say "Coast Guard? I didn't know they were there?" Yet, whenever the country calls, there has been no hesitation to raise our hands, in willing partnership with the rest of our brothers and sisters in arms.
Yet, ALL our fellow Americans serve, civilian and military, at home and often on the front lines. They are keeping our society running, strong and worth defending. What would we do without them? Why bother, without them to serve?
Nowadays, a far cry from those troubled times, the people almost always say, "Thank you for your service." And I never, ever say "You're welcome," though I always appreciate the courtesy from the bottom of my heart.
Instead, I ALWAYS answer, truly meaning it, "It was MY privilege."

- The fact that we even have lives and opportunities to celebrate living, has much to do with what this special day is about.
- It is so important, society is even willing to briefly lower its material productivity, every year, in order to clearly demonstrate, to all, the depth of that importance.
- It is a built-in, pleasing way to teach the generations about things that must never be taken for granted. Never. For the awesome cost paid for this eternal observance is beyond reckoning, in terms of burdens nobly borne by the few, on behalf of the many.
- Sincere thank-you's are always more than mere formalities.

Don't miss either of the events as they are always a great experience for all. We always appreciate the importance of what the Kiwanis Club of Pittsburg does for all veterans and the community. They are an example of excellence to our city.
