PITTSBURG POLICE DEPARTMENT IS A PROUD SUPPORTER of National Night Out, an annual event designed to strengthen our communities by encouraging neighborhoods to engage in stronger relationships with each other and with their local law enforcement partners. The goal is to heighten crime-prevention awareness, build support and participation in local anti-crime programs, and most importantly, send a message that our neighbors are organized and fighting back. It's also the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbors even better.

A CLOSER LOOK: The U.S. State Department

A TOOL FOR SEEING WHAT IS

As we all know, wisest action has to take account of the circumstances which affect our choices. We have to anticipate, detect, and influence changes that might affect the favorable balancing of our life-experience.

We do this close to home, within our neighborhood surroundings, the adjacent City-Neighborhoods, the City as a whole, the County, the SF Bay economic region, the State, the Nation, the planet, and its ever larger surroundings, far beyond. If we are reasonable (and have reasonable opportunities), we simply can't not do this -- it is human nature, in its most thoughtful aspect -- to keep an eye on developments that can improve or worsen things, and to remain ready to dance to whatever tune fate chooses to play.

On the global level, our State Department is a fabulous resource to help us manage our personal and collective situations within our dynamic world.

Adult Education, Community Band, & Small World Park

DID YOU KNOW WE HAVE A COMMUNITY BAND?

What a lucky thing that Greg Enholm, Library Commissioner for our part of the County, forwarded for PCJ publication, the below video of our Pittsburg Community Band, led by Band Director Diane Klaczynski, performing in Small World Park, back in 2006.

During the Pittsburg Mayor's Ice Cream Social held at Small World Park in 2006,

the Pittsburg Community Band performed.

Not only was the performance by the Pittsburg Community Band pleasing, and the setting perfect, I also became aware of something I had missed -- the existence of the band at all. I'm still learning things, every day, about our home town. Surely, I'll run out of "new" things to discover at some point or the other?

After looking into it a little further, I learned from Jack Kane, Vice Principal, Pittsburg Adult Education Center, that enrollment with the band is done as part of course registration with the Center. Registration will begin there on 27 August. Mr. Kane advises that the course catalog will be publicly available in the very near future.

Here is the website for the Adult Education Center. When the coming season's schedule becomes available, we'll try to let you know.

This may be an opportunity for musicians, former musicians, and aspiring ones to have a good time entertaining the community -- while increasing the all-important opportunities for us all to socialize together. It looks like fun and they sound great!

kettle corn, and much, much more... breads, cakes, pies, arts & crafts

All the traditional farmers market staples will be on hand when the Pittsburg farmers market returns Saturday.

1. The market, now in its fifth year, will be held in Old Town Plaza, near Railroad Avenue at Fifth and Sixth streets.

The market will open at 9 a.m. and close around 1 p.m., continuing at the same time every Saturday until Oct. 27, organizer Gloria Baker said.

Particularly exciting, she said, will be a CalFresh food stamps program letting people on public assistance get a little more stretch out of their limited funds.

If someone uses their Electronic Benefit Transfer, or EBT, to draw $10 in tokens to buy goods from the farm vendors, the market will throw in an additional $5 in tokens, Baker said.

2. There will be from 20 to 25 producers, including about 10 local farms, on hand each week, Baker said.

Fresh, hot food will be available as well, including barbecue and Filipino fare, Baker added.

In honor of the Cinco de Mayo holiday, the market's grand opening Saturday will include performances at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. by the Folklorico dancers group.

Disc jockey Phina Love, a market favorite, will also be entertaining the crowd, Baker said.
