Life and Death in the Mount Diablo Coal FieldFrom the 1860s to the turn of the 20th century, the Mount Diablo Coal Field served as the largest coal-producing region in California. Five thriving communities existed at the site. Rose Hill was the only cemetery within the coal field and is the last reminder of the area's history.
Traci Parent has spent over thirty years documenting Rose Hill Cemetery located at the base of Mount Diablo in the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve. Her exhaustive research has resulted in the definitive work on the subject and serves as a model for all future writings on the history of cemeteries in California.
The talk will take place in the Social Hall next to the historic Camp Stoneman Chapel.
Prior to the presentation this World War II army chapel will be open for viewing from 1:30 to 2 pm.
