Monterey Peninsula -- Fort Ord Area Proclaimed a National Monument

This is a screen-grab from a great website, Office Watch -- to call to your attention a little-known purchase advantage for certain parts of the military community.

MicroSoft Office 2007 – Military Appreciation Edition

The Military Appreciation Edition of Office 2007 is a low cost option and not just for current military personnel.

Bookmark and Share

The Military Appreciation Edition of Office 2007 is a low cost option and not just for current military personnel.
One of the lesser known options for buying Office 2007 is the 'Military Appreciation Edition' (MAE) which costs just us$79.95 instead of around $350 in a civilian store.
The 'Military Appreciation Edition' is actually Office 2007 Standard edition containing Word 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007 and Outlook 2007. The software is the same as any other release of Office 2007.
The edition is excellent pricing - the next best option is the Home and Student edition which is usually under $100 in stores but doesn't have Outlook 2007.

THREE INSTALLS

One difference between the MAE and the civilian Standard edition is the licence. The MAE allows installation on three computers in a single household (making it the same arrangement as the Home and Student edition) while the normal Standard edition is limited to a single user on a desktop and laptop computer.

A WIDER ENTITLEMENT

Of course there are special qualifications - you have to be a 'Qualified Military User' but that definition brings in more people than you might think:
"
To be a Qualified Military User, you must be:
  • Active U. S. Military personnel with valid Military identification;
  • Retired U.S. Military personnel with valid Military identification; or
  • Dependent of U.S. Military personnel meeting one of the above criteria with a valid Military identification.
"
The term 'US Military' isn't explicitly defined but we can infer from the Microsoft web page that it includes Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard.
It's not just currently serving men and women who qualify - retired service people with appropriate ID can get the cut price too.
In addition, the dependants of active and retired service personnel can qualify. That casts a very wide net.

HOW TO BUY

The Military Appreciation Edition of Office 2007 can be purchased from Exchange stores in the US and also the Army and Air Force Exchange Service online.

HOME USE PROGRAMS

Another option for some military staff and others who work for large organizations is the Home Use Program. This arrangement between Microsoft and buyers of large scale licences for Office allows staff to buy Office 2007 for a trivial amount like $29.95. Many military staff can make use of the Home Use Program if their IT department has made the necessary arrangements with Microsoft.

Dear Friend:

For the first time, military families can now obtain a free annual pass to visit more than 2,000 national parks, wildlife refuges, national forests, and other public lands around the nation.  To learn more, please click here.

Active duty service members and their dependents can pick up their free “America the Beautiful” military pass at any national park, wildlife refuge, or other public land that charges an entrance fee.  A list of participating sites is available here.

Our nation can never repay the debt we owe to our men and women in uniform, who sacrifice so much to defend our freedom.  But we can take advantage of opportunities like this one to show our immense gratitude.  As co-chair of the Senate Military Families Caucus, I hope that military families will accept this small token of our appreciation and enjoy the priceless natural beauty to be found across America.
Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

Dear Friend:

This week, as Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, I released a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report that found that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) doesn’t require operating nuclear reactors to utilize the most up-to-date method of risk analysis to assess vulnerability to earthquakes, floods, or other natural disasters.  To read more, please click here.  To read the GAO report, click here.

There is simply no excuse for the NRC's failure to require the best methods to assess the threat posed by earthquakes and other natural disasters to our nuclear power plants.  While the NRC has agreed to study the issue, action is needed now to ensure that standards are in place that best protect the health and safety of the American public.
Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

-------------- Official Flag Code --------------

"The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day, the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff."

As proclaimed each year by the President of the United States of America, Memorial Day is a day of prayer for permanent peace. All Americans are asked to observe the National Moment of Remembrance beginning at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day.

Made In America!
Not all American flags are made in the United States of America!  You can be assured the US flags we sell at Gettysburg Flag Works are ALL made in the USA. There are many retailers selling the stars and stripes that are made in other countries.  If you want to do your part to keep American workers employed, consider buying only American made American flags!   The Veterans who have served under this flag will appreciate it too.

How to fly your flag at Half Staff
What sort of flag pole are you using?

Flag at half staffWhen raising the flag to half staff on a vertical pole, always raise it briskly to the top of the flagpole for a moment before lowering it. When taking it down for the night, raise it to the top of the flagpole again & lower it to the bottom.

With a telescoping flag pole it is acceptable to put the USA flag on the second set of rings instead of the top set. In this case the top set would be left empty.

When the United States flag is flown at half-staff,
State & other flags should be removed or flown at half-staff too.Mourning ribbon on flag
For flags that can't be lowered, such as those on many homes, the American Legion says that attaching a black ribbon or streamer to the top of the flag is an acceptable alternative. The ribbon should be the same width as a stripe on the flag and the same length as the flag.
