Congressman Miller Sends Congratulations!

On Wed, May 23, 2012 at 1:44 PM, Rep. George Miller <CA07GMIMA@mail.house.gov> wrote:

Friends,

Congratulations are in order! This month and next, many families are celebrating the accomplishments of their recent graduates – kids are moving up from middle school to high school, from high school to college, and from college to a job or another adventure. We’re celebrating my granddaughter’s high school graduation this week – and like so many family members, we couldn’t be prouder.

  • But graduating from college comes with a particularly heavy burden – starting to pay off college loans.
  • You and I know that our students’ education is a critical down payment on the future strength of America’s middle class. It’s the main stepping stone toward getting ahead in life. It’s the reason I’ve fought to make our schools better and to make the cost of college more affordable and why I’m fighting now to keep Stafford student loan interest rates at a low 3.4 percent.  But those loans are about to get a lot more expensive for seven million students if Congress does not act soon.
  • I’m urging my Republicans colleagues who control the House to join me in preventing a doubling of student loan interest rates by passing sensible legislation that will keep rates low.  But Republicans refuse to accept our bill.  They say that if middle class students want affordable loans, then middle class women and children will have to go without immunizations and cancer screenings.  That’s outrageous.

Letting interest rates double is another attack on the middle class that we can’t afford.  In 38 days the rates will double if Congress fails to reach an agreement.  Join me on Facebook – tell me what having a quality, affordable education has meant to you and your family.

Sincerely,

GEORGE MILLER
