RE CITIZENS REMARKS – High school students in Pittsburg should be able to attend Los Medanos College

My name is Greg Enholm and I reside in the unincorporated community of Bay Point.

1.  While I have been the District 5 County Library Commissioner for Pittsburg since 2004, I am here today because I have been a high school math teacher for 2000-2009 and a Heald College Concord math professor for a year.

2.  Los Medanos College used to allow hundreds of Pittsburg High School students to take college courses concurrently with their high school courses. As a teacher and now professor, I strongly encourage high school students to take at least one college course.

3.  By attending, as your County Library Commissioner, the City’s May 15th meeting, held at Marina Vista Elementary School’s Library, I learned from Pittsburg Unified School District Superintendent Linda Rondeau that there are only about 50 Pittsburg High School students currently allowed to take courses at Los Medanos College. PHS students are increasingly going directly to 4-year colleges and universities after graduating so taking an LMC course would be a great experience for them.

4.  The college course experience is invaluable for high school students because college is very different from high school. For instance, one college credit typically counts for two high school credits.

5.  As you may know, all high school students are eligible to take community college courses subject to criteria and space available under rules clearly laid out in the course catalog requiring an Age Waiver Form or Unit Limit Waiver Form signed by the principal and parent. There are specific rules which must be met by the student.

6.  You know PUSD has made dramatic improvements in recent years. PUSD’s high school graduation rate rose to 66.3% in 2011 from 64.3% in 2010 but remained below the County averages of 82.2% and 79.9% and the Mt. Diablo Unified School District averages 81.8% and 74.8%. MDUSD serves Oak Hills.

7.  I believe the Pittsburg City Council is the best forum for asking the College District to explain how more high school students living in Pittsburg can take courses at LMC rather than have separate meetings with PUSD, MDUSD, and other groups.

8.  Such a request is particularly important because the College Board is planning to ask voters to approve a parcel tax about $11 in the November 2012 election to allow more classes to be offered.

7.  I believe Pittsburg voters would be more willing to vote for this tax if more of the city’s high school students could take courses at LMC.  Having more Pittsburg high school students take LMC courses is good for the City. An increasing high school graduation rate is good for the City.

8.  Encouraging Pittsburg residents to take LMC courses which lead to good, highpaying
jobs in Pittsburg is good for the City.

7.  So, I am asking the City Council to request a presentation in the near future by the College District (contact Tim Leong, District Director of Communications and Community Relations, 925 229-1000 ext. 1211) covering both how to increase the number of high school students attending LMC and to provide information on a College District parcel tax.

Thank you.

We were recently approached by an amazing 5-year-old philanthropist, Naomi, a little girl with a big heart for animals. At her preschool, each graduating student is tasked with fundraising for a charity, and Naomi selected Lindsay Wildlife Museum as her recipient because she wants to help sick and injured animals. Through her lemonade stand and associated outreach, she raised $2,560 for the museum!

Thank you, Naomi!

City of Pittsburg: BIRDS POSITIVE FOR WEST NILE VIRUS

BIRDS POSITIVE FOR WEST NILE VIRUS IN PLEASANT HILL AND KNIGHTSEN

Public is urged to wear mosquito repellent and report neglected swimming pools and other mosquito sources

CONCORD, CALIFORNIA - - The Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District announced today that two more birds tested positive for West Nile virus. The birds, both American crows, were found near Sunset Road and Eden Plains Road in Knightsen and Viking Drive and Contra Costa Boulevard in Pleasant Hill.

"The risk of West Nile virus is elevated due to several factors," said Deborah Bass, public affairs manager for the District. "Those include hot weather, the presence of infected dead birds, as well as high populations of mosquitoes in the area."

Bass urges residents to check their properties for mosquito sources and to report any neglected standing water to the District, especially neglected swimming pools since they can produce more than 1 million mosquitoes and affect people up to five miles away. Reports may be made anonymously.

"We just want to know where the mosquitoes are so we can reduce the risk of West Nile virus and protect people," Bass added.

Residents are urged to wear mosquito repellent when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are present.

West Nile virus symptoms of the mild form include fever, headache, tiredness, body aches, and swollen lymph glands. While the illness can be as short as a few days, even healthy people have reported being sick for several weeks.

Less than one percent of individuals (about 1 in 150 people) infected with West Nile virus will develop severe illness. The severe symptoms can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. These symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent. West Nile virus infection can be fatal.

Residents are urged to help reduce their risk of contracting mosquito-borne diseases by following these guidelines:

  • Don't produce mosquitoes on your property. Dump or drain standing water. Mosquitoes can't begin their life without water.
  • Defend yourself against mosquitoes using repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
  • Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are present, typically Dawn and Dusk.
  • Report neglected swimming pools by calling 925-771-6195 or visiting www.ContraCostaMosquito.com Anonymous calls accepted. Just one neglected pool can produce more than 1 million mosquitoes and affect people up to five miles away.

The District makes every effort to notify residents about West Nile virus activity and adult mosquito spraying events. People wishing to be notified about adult mosquito spraying in residential areas have several options. They may visit the District's website and opt to receive the maps and notifications automatically by email. There is also an option to receive media releases and the Mosquito Bytes newsletter. These communications are posted directly on the District's website. Spray schedules are also available by calling the District at (925) 771-6195 and listening to a recorded message.

Since 2005, 39 people in Contra Costa County have been diagnosed with West Nile virus. In 2006, two people died from the disease. A recent study has shown that the majority of cases are undiagnosed and grossly under reported. This year, two groups of mosquitoes and six dead birds have tested positive for the virus.

Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District, an independent special district and public health agency, is located at 155 Mason Circle in Concord. Call the District to report mosquito problems at (925) 771-6195 or visit their office between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to get FREE mosquitofish for ornamental ponds, horse troughs or neglected swimming pools.

For information concerning human West Nile virus symptoms, prevention, or testing, please call the Contra Costa Health Services department at (888) 959-9911. For information concerning West Nile virus and horses, please call the California Department of Food and Agriculture Animal Health Branch at (916) 654-1447.

CRIMINALITY ALERT!! 7/9/12 FBI-Expected Malicious Computer Attack

‎0709 0910 --  You all may have heard the news, but just in case, the FBI is expecting some nasty things to happen, very soon. I'm sorry it didn't occur to me to pass this word sooner.

But, rest easy. They have figured out an easy fix. Go to the following website and carry out their elegantly simple procedure. Good luck to us all. Society is still learning all the advantages of this wondrous new technology, but sadly, the miscreants are hard at work, too. Things WILL get better -- good prevails over evil:

AREA-WIDE "4th OF JULY FIREWORKS" DISPLAYS

What's going to happen,
within our territory,
to help celebrate the
2ND GREATEST BIRTHDAY TRADITION
OF ALL TIME!

FIREWORKS IN TOWN:  The City of Pittsburg will not have a public fireworks display  -- AND, LET'S ALL SINCERELY HOPE THERE WON'T BE ANY PRIVATE, AMATEUR ONES, EITHER!!!  Roofs and lawns and unwary people are often known to burn when ignited.

FIREWORKS ALL OVER THE PLACE:  Here's what The Contra Costa Times says about the day's goings-on. (a Google search).  And, here's what Google, itself, says about the doings in the Bay Area

FIREWORKS ON TELEVISION: Google, again.

FIREWORKS IN SPORTS:   The G-people, again. Who else?

Please remember:
  • THAT Consumer Fireworks are illegal for very sound REASONS -- born of profoundly heart-breaking experiences -- which have damaged or destroyed -- real people and other valuable things;
  • THAT the conditions are PERFECT for creating BRAND NEW tragedies to lament:   (1) It's hot.   (2)  It's dry.   (3)  There is much super-fuel from all the brown, dead vegetation -- on lawns, streets and hills.   (4)  Buildings and other things (including people) often burn very efficiently.    (5)  Overly busy fire departments, on ever-tightening budgets have plenty to do already and would not be amused by yet more inconvenient challenges.   (6)  It's so unpleasant to suddenly have to find another place to stay -- and safely store whatever remains of one's stuff -- especially, if it involves pain, hospitals, or more permanent accommodations.
  • THAT children (of all ages) don't necessarily know what the "no-no's" are, automatically.  These things often have to be made clear to them, quite deliberately -- for this is all far too dangerous (and expensive) to leave to chance, poor example, or lax enforcement of the rules.  Anyone detecting illegal fireworks should call 911 to trigger a police response. (As more citizens complain, it RAISES "POLICE-RESPONSE" priorities and SPEEDS THINGS UP!!!)
  • THAT innocent people, trying to mind their own business, are often the ones who have to suddenly pay for another's thoughtless or deliberate acts -- and that such a thing still is not very sporting.
  • THAT a tragedy can forever change a joyous, national event -- transforming things, such that each subsequent July 4th is virtually guaranteed to be draped with profoundest sorrow and viewed with deepest dread.  There should only be room for great joy -- on the anniversary of the day when humankind gained -- such an ENORMOUS ADVANTAGE in this life -- still not all that long ago. (In the great scheme of things, less than two and a half centuries is a fraction of a heart-beat.)
  • THAT things need not turn out badly, AT ALL.  Everyone simply must realize that our entire great human existence is such a chain-reaction -- one good or bad act can really, really  energize or spoil the whole thing -- or affect a big enough part of it, so as to matter, deeply.

It's serious business insuring that life remains a fun thing to have, keep, and make the most of -- and which doesn't end prematurely or inconveniently.

Let's make the 236th Anniversary of the "Day Everything Changed" the best one ever (and maximize our chances of seeing the 237th one)!
