1.  What: The DEA has scheduled the 5th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day (NTBD).

2.  When:  Saturday, April 27 -- from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

3.  Where:  Pittsburg Police Department, City Hall, 65 Civic Avenue, Pittsburg

4.  Who:  The City of Pittsburg Police Department will be collection center for these drugs.

5.  Action:  Turn in your unused or expired medication for safe disposal.

6.1  DISPOSAL:  The Dangers of Not Disposing of Prescription Drugs Properly

a.  Local law enforcement agencies across the US are working together to participate in the nationwide USDEA's National Take-back Day (NTBD).

b.  NTBD is an effort
  • -- to prevent prescription drug abuse and
  • -- to keep trace drugs out of our creeks, the Delta, and the Bay.
c.  Wastewater treatment plants CANNOT remove many compounds found in medications

d.  When flushed or put in a landfill
  • drugs are discharged into our surface and ground water
  • and consumed by fish and wildlife.

6.2  ABUSE:  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
  • in one month alone, nearly seven million Americans over age 12 reported abusing prescription medications.
  • Approximately 60% of people who abuse prescription painkillers say they obtained the drugs from friends or relatives, for FREE.
  • Many take the drugs without permission.
