| | Time to Trim TreesEvery year, our wildlife hospital sees many baby birds and squirrels because their nest trees were trimmed or cut down. The tree trimmers often do not even see the nest until it is on the ground since it can be difficult to see nests in trees. Hummingbird nests are very small and squirrel nests are very large but sometimes look like just a pile of leaves in a tree—both can be easy to miss. Nesting season for our local wildlife is over for this year, so now is the time to safely prune trees, but the window for safe pruning is not very long. Anna's hummingbirds will begin nesting in January, with eastern fox squirrels and band-tailed pigeons not much later. If your trees need trimming this coming year, please give wildlife a break by doing it October through December before the nesting season begins again. Your backyard wildlife will be safe and you can feel good knowing that planning ahead has saved lives. | |
