GUN VIOLENCE SUPPRESSION: Congressman Miller Gives Us Each a Way!

Dear Friends,

Every day, 50 children and teens are shot. Eight of those children die, five from murder. Since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary last month, more than 900 Americans have been killed by guns.

Yesterday, President Obama put forward a comprehensive plan to reduce gun violence in the United States, including a mandate for universal background checks for every gun purchase, restrictions on high capacity ammunition magazines, a ban on dangerous, military-style assault weapons, stronger federal gun trafficking laws, and a stronger approach to mental health and education issues.

I support his proposal and took part in a hearing House Democrats held yesterday to discuss ways to strengthen sensible gun safety laws, fix glaring loopholes, and keep dangerous people away from powerful weapons.

As Congress now grapples with this important issue, I want to hear from you. What do you think will help prevent gun violence in America? Let me know by taking part in my gun violence prevention survey here.

The death, injury and heartache caused by gun violence are devastating. We need to act now. Unless we do, more than 120,000 people will be killed by guns over the next four years. Instead, I’d like to be able to say that together, we did something to save lives.

1.  I don't think the President's ideas step on the toes of anyone with lawful ideas and desires about their weapons. I love the fascinating inventions, personally -- but I love people even more.  As Congressman Miller says:

"President Obama has formally announced his proposals for reducing gun violence in America, the main components of which include:

-- renewing an assault weapon ban,
-- prohibiting high capacity magazines,
-- implementing universal background checks for all gun purchases in the U.S.,
-- and new federal statutes to crack down on trafficking and "straw purchases." "

Congress is now reviewing these proposals and would like to know what we think about them. Our Representatives would welcome a message, in the "contact me" area of their official websites.

NOT BAD, HUH? COULD BE A LOT WORSE. AND, IT'S MUCH, MUCH BETTER THAN DOING NOTHING AT ALL, YES?

Some may quibble that these things do nothing about the "bad actors" who invent and follow their own laws.  That may or may not be so, but this DOES take some nagging pieces off the "chess board," so that we CAN get on with the other needful things, no longer distracted by these basic, logical steps.
