Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

More than 7 million Americans abuse prescription medications. Prescription pharmaceuticals can be just as dangerous as illegal drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision. The source of most abused medications is from the home medicine cabinet.

Many people do not know what to do with unused, unwanted and expired prescription medications. Prescription drugs thrown in the trash or flushed down the toilet can contaminate the water supply. Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment.

On September 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and its community partners will hold a National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, operating collection sites at multiple locations throughout Contra Costa County where local residents can turn in their unused, unwanted and expired prescription medications.
