1 - DISASTER PREPAREDNESS -- Personal Transport

28 Sep 2012

DISASTER Preparedness
Keep those gas tanks at least HALF-FULL at all times!

1. PROBLEM

This is kind of a tough one, I know -- time, cash-flow, other hassles.
  • Yet, think about it, please. In an area disaster, gas stations can lose electrical power and thus, can't sell you gas -- probably when you most need it -- AND THERE WILL BE LONG, LONG LINES OF AGITATED PEOPLE -- not necessarily on their best behavior.
  • When the bad times hit, you don't want to be trapped for want of fuel.
  • Also, during those desperate times, people are known to STEAL fuel, so a locking gas cap isn't a bad idea, either.

2. A WAY TO LOOK AT IT:

One way that helps me (for this tip is a hassle in real life) is to THINK of the bottom half of my tank as "MY RESERVE." When I enter that risk-area, that is my alarm bell -- and I remain uncomfortable until I go and top off -- then I think, "Ahhh."

3. THIS IS NOT MY OWN IDEA

It's one of the tips you can find in many disaster preparedness resources (which you also might wish to explore as completely as you can, sooner is best).

If you search this blog, you will find more things to think about, BEFORE the DEFINITELY-COMING bad day scrambles things for you.  I have something in the works that will make all this planning easier for you, but meanwhile ...

You know the old saying: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

More than 7 million Americans abuse prescription medications. Prescription pharmaceuticals can be just as dangerous as illegal drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision. The source of most abused medications is from the home medicine cabinet.

Many people do not know what to do with unused, unwanted and expired prescription medications. Prescription drugs thrown in the trash or flushed down the toilet can contaminate the water supply. Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment.

On September 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and its community partners will hold a National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, operating collection sites at multiple locations throughout Contra Costa County where local residents can turn in their unused, unwanted and expired prescription medications.

ICEBREAKER!! The End for Ex-Coast Guard Cutter GLACIER, Age 58

Update: 9/20/12 -- Talked with ESCO Marine, a Texas shipbreaker.  After a 40-day journey from the "mothball fleet" at Suisun Bay, CA to Brownsville, TX, ex-Glacier arrived at her final port on 19 June.  Breaking of the vessel began shortly thereafter and continues, quite rapidly -- until around 1 October.  From that moment -- an existence of 58 years, 34 days ceases -- for Glacier will be no more  -- except for her atoms, to be blended into valued new steel products or lying somewhere, rusting back to nature -- and in the fading particles of memory, for those to whom she meant something.  She mattered. There is always that.  And that's that.

First published: 4/18/12

SAD, BUT INEVITABLE, END FOR A FAMOUS SHIP
"And this, too, shall pass away..."

YOU CAN STILL SEE HER, if you look closely (and quickly) enough. Look down and east, from the Benicia Bridge.  She sits idled and nestled-in among the aging mothball fleet, in the row closest to you.  She's the second ship from the north, but not for much longer -- she's heading for the "shipbreakers," real soon.

Next to the other aging vessels, the 310'-long ex-Coast Guard Icebreaker, GLACIER,  seems short and fat -- but, she is "fat" for a reason.  She had to cut wide enough channels in the thick polar ice to allow other vessels to follow her to their iced-in destinations

BACKGROUND NOTE
By the way, the Coast Guard is like our nation's "Swiss Army-knife" of the seas.
    • We all know that if there is a life (or property) to be saved, on almost any navigable, interstate water-body (such as "Katrina," rivers, lakes, oceans), regardless of weather conditions (or anything else), our Coast Guard is likely to be the one to do it.  They say "we have to go out, but we don't have to come back in."
    • With the recent 2012 centennial of the  death of RMS Titanic, it's fitting to note that not a single ship has ever been lost due to iceberg collision, since that tragedy.  This is largely due to the International Ice Patrol, for which our Coast Guard has always been the driving force.
    • Oh, there's so much material for future articles -- but with this background, we shouldn't be surprised that the Coast Guard also runs all the nation's public icebreakers -- and has significant presence -- performing a multitude of other vital functions -- all over the globe.
    .
LONG LIVE THE U.S. COAST GUARD --
one of the nation's VERY BEST bargains, undeniably!

WHAT A MACHINE "BIG RED" WAS!  Carrying a crew of around 200, plus a two-helicopter detachment, her 10 locomotive-sized engines and nearly 2"-thick steel hull enabled her to drive through ice, up to 2-stories thick!  The surface of the ice is at sea-level, but the thickness is measured downward from that surface.

SHE CARRIED A SUITE OF SCIENCE LABORATORIES to support 10 marine scientists and to give them access to the coldest regions of the earth -- north and south -- to do amazing science in places inaccessible by any other means.  That, and logistical support for the US-Antarctic base at McMurdo Sound.  There is even an enlisted Coast Guard specialty-field, "Marine Science Technician," to support the science teams who arrived from various universities and other institutions, to temporarily serve during her annual deployments into the cold, remote wastes of the planet.  And, oh, the great discoveries she enabled.

TO BREAK THE THICKER ICE, she used the "backing and ramming" technique.  With all engines on line, she would back down, about 1/4 mile -- then charge ahead, flank speed, smacking into the ice -- riding up on top -- stopping at the right instant (or else risk becoming stuck) -- to allow her weight, momentum, and temporary air space below the ice, to collapse the hard blue-white stuff.  Then, repeating the cycle -- non-stop -- for weeks -- under the 24-hour sun -- to cut the roughly 27 mile channel to her usual summer destination on the southern continent -- during annual "OPERATION DEEP FREEZE" deployments.  (The same technique took the scientists where the satellites said they should explore and which only a powerful icebreaker could ever hope to reach.)

SHE WAS SO SOLID that icebreaking activities were barely discernible to those inside her.  The newer Coast Guard icebreakers are far more powerful and efficient, and can do the same job in days -- and much cheaper -- so, her fate was sealed.  But for her time, she was "Big Red." (Coast Guard polar icebreakers are painted red, as opposed to the usual white, to better contrast with their typical operating environment -- the camouflage of typical "Coast Guard white" would have been inappropriate).

HER HISTORY AND FATE ARE EXCERPTED BELOW -- but there's more -- much more to this masterpiece of naval engineering.  When former crew members witness the sad, ignominious end to ships where they spent significant portions of their youth -- a grieving often takes place (sort of like losing an old friend who succeeded in keeping one alive and comfortable and entertained with adventures).  I grieve, but such is life.

A GLACIER SOCIETY formed in an effort to save the ship and convert it into a museum but, alas, the effort came to naught.

      WIKIPEDIA Excerpts:

USS Glacier (AGB-4) (later USCGC Glacier (WAG/WAGB-4)) is the historic Glacier class icebreaker which served in the first through fifteenth Operation Deep Freeze expeditions. Glacier was first icebreaker to make her way through the frozen Bellingshausen Sea, and most of the topography in the area is named for her crewmembers. When built, Glacier had the largest capacity single armature DC motors ever installed on a ship Glacier was capable of breaking ice up to 20 feet (6.1 m) thick, and of continuous breaking of 4-foot (1.2 m) thick ice at 3 knots (5.6 km/h; 3.5 mph)...

... Following 29 Antarctic and 10 Arctic deployments, Glacier was decommissioned in 1987. She is currently under the control of the U.S. Maritime Administration, located in the U.S. Naval Reserve Fleet, Suisun Bay, on the Sacramento RiverCalifornia

...  On February 16, 2012 Glacier was sold for scrap for $146,726. She's scheduled to be broken up at ESCO Marine in Brownsville, Texas.  :(

[... and, as of around 1 October 2012, Glacier will be no more.]

      David Nelson

Note:  Glacier's Navy and Coast Guard hull numbers were 4, once and always.  The "W" identifies it as a Coast Guard ship.  The other vessels shown are to give you added perspective on ships of her function and type.  As to sisters in her particular class of ice-breaker, I believe she was unique in all the world.

      EMERGENCY READINESS: Important Documents

      Posted: 9/26/12/Wed

      Purpose

To inform you of a recently found useful web-link which explains the how's and why's of protecting vital, often irreplaceable, documents against fire damage or loss.

      Please Note

Other important "emergency readiness" and "disaster readiness" information is contained in this blog. Use the handy search box, top right corner of the main bulletin board, to find them.

      Discussion

The above-referenced article-link (Legal Zoon) is self-explanatory.  Here are the opening paragraphs:
      • The images from the recent wildfires in California are heartbreaking—families fleeing their neighborhoods at a moment's notice, people returning to find their homes reduced to ashes and their most precious possessions gone forever. With help pouring in from all over the country, Californians are already starting to rebuild.
      • But the threat of fire isn't unique to California. In fact, the US Fire Administration estimates that fires nationwide caused more than $11 billion in property damage in 2007.
      • Although 91% of Americans agree it's important to prepare for a disaster, only slightly more than half have taken steps to do so. [Oh, my!!!]
      • One great way to make sure you're prepared is to get a fireproof safe. What should you store it in? Here's a list of the top 10 suggested items to keep in your fireproof safe:

      PITTSBURG -- A HISTORICAL TIME-LINE

      1.  The wonderfully relevant web page, entitled, "Community Guide and Business Directory -- Our Past... Our Future, " was brought to my attention by our Pittsburg neighbor, Dena Jordan (thanks, D).

      2.  It was produced and published under the auspices of the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce.  It starts in 1839 and discusses milestones to 2010.

      3.  While we're on the topic, more interesting historical information can be found on our City at this Wikipedia link, entitled, "Pittsburg, California."

Knowing where we've been has a lot to do with where we're heading.

      4.  I hope to do similar articles for neighboring towns within East County, in the near future -- and beyond, as soon as feasible.

      5.  I might add that more historical data is being accumulated to further flesh-out the above materials.

Change of AREA CODE (408) to (669) as of 10/21/12

      Posted: 9/24/12/Mon

      PURPOSE

To announce a forthcoming important change in the regional communications infrastructure -- namely the "overlay" of a new area code (669), which effectively replaces (408) in the south of the San Francisco Bay Area, and which is mandated for adoption, starting 21 October.

      DISCUSSION

This change is explained, below, in both official and plain language.  Following these, it seemed reasonable to include a few general links, perhaps relevant to this topic.

      1.  In Official Language

New California Area Code: 669 -- Article excerpt:

      • The California Public Utilities Commission approved on October 20, 2011 the introduction of an overlay area code as a relief plan for existing NPA 408 serving cities such as Santa Clara, Cupertino, San Jose, Sunnyvale.
      • The new area code 669 will cover the exact same area currently covered by area code 408
      • As a result 1+10 digit dialing will be the dialing format for residents of this area.
      • Permissive 1+10 digit dialing in area code 408 will commence on April 21, 2012 and end on October 20, 2012 when 1+10 digit dialing becomes mandatory.
      • The new area code 669 will officially be activated on November 20, 2012.
      • See official NANPA announcement and map of the new overlay complex (PDF document)

      2.  In Plain Language

This nice article, entitled "South Bay area code overlay starts in October," Mountain View Voice, explains the whole thing in plain language

      SERVING THE HEROES ONCE AGAIN!!!

      Posted:  23 Sep 12

      Update: 26 Sept 12
Please also see reference #5, added below, concerning the declared intention of the US Department of Veterans Affairs "to end Vet homelessness by 2015!"

      1.  PURPOSE

To inform you about a remarkable event that occurs in our midst, every two years.

      2.  BACKGROUND
      • During a 4-day period, from 13 to 16 September 2012, another great "East Bay Stand-Down" was conducted on the Alameda County Fairgrounds, in Pleasanton, California.
      • In a nutshell, this awesome event involves busing-in of nearly 1000 veterans in crises, to live in a tent city, specially constructed for their benefit, during their 4-day & 3-night stay.
      • Virtually, their every imaginable need is attended to -- such that they receive a "fresh new start" in the race of life.  And, it works, big-time.   Years later, many reinvigorated veterans return as volunteers for this event, "to give back."  (The great human chain-reaction continues, in all its full and glorious display.)
      • Nearly 1000 volunteers from all walks of life donate themselves to this cause -- and come away, recharged with the lasting and deep inspiration of having helped others, while seeing and revealing the best in themselves.  Helping still feels good and volunteerism has always been an important national fuel -- it's very interesting what happens when freedom is at work.
      • Smiles abounded in every face and eye.
      • The announcement for this latest event is included as Reference #1, below.

      3.  REFERENCES

      4.  THE SPECIAL NATURE OF THESE STAND-DOWNS

The US Department of Veterans Affairs says it best:
      • Stand Downs are one part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ efforts to provide services to homeless veterans.
      • Stand Downs are typically one to three day events providing services to homeless Veterans such as food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counseling, and referrals to a variety of other necessary services, such as housing, employment and substance abuse treatment.
      • Stand Downs are collaborative events, coordinated between local VAs, other government agencies, and community agencies who serve the homeless.
      • The first Stand Down was organized in 1988 by a group of Vietnam Veterans in San Diego.  Since then, Stand Downs have been used as an effective tool in reaching out to homeless Veterans, reaching more than 200,000 Veterans and their family members between 1994-2000.
      • The national schedule can be viewed at the link provided as Reference #2, above, and which was the source of the above quote.  It is noted that the largest of these events, "The East Bay Stand-down" was inadvertently excluded and is being brought to the attention of the DVA.

      5.  MY PERSONAL IMPRESSIONS
      • I was privileged to be accepted as a volunteer, for the second time.  I plan to never miss these, for as long as I am able -- they are that delightful!  While all the jobs are pleasing, last time, I was fortunate to guard the gate near the cooking tent (very fattening, though).  This time, I got to drive the golf carts, ferrying Vets and Volunteers all over the place.  I've been lucky to be assigned to such cushy jobs.
      • A description of my experiences at this biennial event, last held in 2010, is contained in the blog article, reference #3, above -- and still applies, except that...
      • This time, it was even better.  Partly due to my eager anticipation, I'm sure.  Partly due to the fact that they keep being diligently refined, in light of growing experience.  Yet, they already seemed to be perfection to my eyes.
      • You really should check out reference #3, in order to begin to understand how beautifully planned and executed these vastly important events truly are.  YOU WILL BE EVEN PROUDER TO HAVE BEEN BORN INTO THIS GREAT HUMAN SPECIES OF OURS!

      6.  AN IMPORTANT SIDE-BAR

      Non-Veterans are not forgotten, either.
Just remembered in a different way.

Please see reference #4, for quick and easy measures at our fingertips.

Given a chance, everyone can be a hero,
because that's just the way we are!!

      Respectfully,

      David Nelson

      2.  Once the menu appears, it now presents you with five choices, with the following icons arranged, vertically:
      • Translate -- convert the blog to another language
      • Month-by-Month -- select the year and month of articles you want to see
      • Categories -- select a category to see a specific group of articles AND the number of articles in each group.   (this works fine, but the categories need a lot of readjustment work -- and that's on my work list)
      • Tag Cloud -- shows above categories with the relative size-of-each-word indicating how populated the category is with blog articles.  (The number of articles is also indicated).
      • Subscribe -- enables you to follow this blog with "news readers."  Please see this article, which explains how to do this, "BEST!!! MORE POWER OVER THIS BLOG!! On-Line News Readers"
      3.  To return the "Bulletin Board" to normal (following month, category, tag, and search-box searches) in order to be able to see all the available articles:
      • Once you've found the articles you wish to see, simply click the "Bulletin Board" option on the horizontal menu bar, just below the header.
      • If your browser doesn't allow you to see the horizontal menu bar, use the back-up menu (as indicated in the next section, below).
      D.  AND

Of course, you can always use the full-powered "Search Box," upper right corner of the bulletin board, on the header line containing the words, "Pittsburg, CA -- City-Journal."

For more information to help you navigate this blog, please click this article: "HELP: BLOG TOOL-KIT & BACK-UP MENU"

LIFE-TOOL: SECOND LANGUAGE: Why learn Spanish?

      Posted: 9/22/12

      1.  Purpose

      a.  To help facilitate California (and national) living, by suggesting and justifying that the ability to speak Spanish will increase social productivity and happiness.

      b.  To make it more convenient for people to learn Spanish by accumulating, here, possible resources for doing so.   Suggestions and comments are welcome below this article.

      c.  And then, as an after thought, I would like to express my further reasoning as to why multilingualism, and even bilingualism, will yield a much better world for us -- and so, therefore, should even be universally embraced.  The better we can understand one another, the better off we'll all be -- beyond all reasonable doubt.

      2.  Rationale

      IN MY OPINION --

      a.  After all, we are closely interwoven, as permanent neighbors, with a great Spanish-speaking nation next door and, perhaps less so, with other similar nations within our hemisphere and around the larger world.  We share a common history and bond.
      b.  A sizable number of fellow North American Spanish-speaking residents have not yet mastered English, for all sorts of plausible, difficult-to-overcome reasons -- else they would already be speaking our somewhat complicated national language.
      • Can't we meet them half-way?  Roll out the "welcome mat," in such a mutually pleasing and highly respectful way?
      • Aren't there already enough barriers to human understanding to allow this one to remain, unchecked?
      c.  Words and language help us think.  The more words we have in our vocabularies, the more things we can think about -- and the more concepts we can absorb and handle.
      • The more languages we can speak, the more access we WILL SURELY HAVE TO ALL THE WORLD'S WISDOM.

      d.  Because English is the world's lingua franca, it's main working language, those who are born to be native speakers hold an advantage and a dilemma.
      • The advantage is that you can probably function, almost anywhere, if you speak English.
      • The dilemma is, that while the rest of the world is almost forced to be bi-lingual (with English being the primary second language), English-speakers have a world of languages from which to choose  -- or can function quite well, doing nothing about it at all.  So many choices based on English.
      • THEREFORE:  Multi-lingualism, being such an enormous advantage in personal thinking-power, gives the rest of the world "an edge" over the mono-lingual.

      e.  The following is a further set of reasons to consider learning Spanish for the good of individuals and families, the local and regional environment, California, the Nation, and the world.  This reasoning was lifted directly from the marketing material of the Pimsleur Approach, linked in Section 3, below.  This list is, by no means, comprehensive:

      Pimsleur's Reasoning for Learning Spanish
      1. By the year 2050, ten percent of the world's population will speak Spanish. It is also projected that at that time, the United States will be the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world.   [This information backed by this source: Fox News - Latino] Not knowing the language will be severely limiting as more and more people become bilingual.
      2. Because its roots are in Latin, Spanish is a gateway to learning other Romance languages, and even languages from other parts of the world. French, Italian, Portuguese, and other languages become easier to pick up once you've learned Spanish. And you may be surprised to know Spanish shares many cognates with unrelated languages such as Russian, German, and even English.
      3. Spanish is one of the most phonetic languages in the world. Knowing how a word is spelled makes it very easy to know how to pronounce it. This also makes it one of the easiest languages to learn quickly.
      4. It's a small world after all. Though there are differences in vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation between Spanish spoken in Spain and Latin American Spanish, there are still enough similarities to facilitate communication

      3.  Spanish-Learning Resources

      General

      Self-Teaching Programs
      Attended Learning Programs
      Other
      • Tip:  Use handy "translation" features of Google and other providers, as often as possible (and now, available on this blog)
      • Tip:  Watch and listen to Spanish language broadcasts -- radio and TV
      • Tip:  Practice language CD's during travel and casual time
      • Tip:  Strike up conversations with Spanish speakers
      • Tip:  Get to know Spanish-speaking neighbors  (and all the rest, too)

      4.  HUMAN COMMUNICATIONS, IN GENERAL

WHY I THINK BI-LINGUALISM WILL YIELD A MUCH BETTER WORLD FOR US

      1. GOOD COMMUNICATIONS is THE INDISPENSABLE tool in creating and sustaining personal and collective well-being -- when MORE THAN ONE other human being is involved -- and, THERE ALMOST ALWAYS IS MORE THAN ONE PERSON INVOLVED -- often, many more.

      2. EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM AMONG HUMANS IS ROOTED IN OR AGGRAVATED BY COMMUNICATION FAILURES. How could this not be so, when the ONLY way we can possibly exist together is by exchanging information and ideas -- the trait that makes us human?

      3. If we can't accurately plant that which is in our minds and hearts, into the minds of others, how are they to understand, rather than misunderstand us? How are we to do life-operations together? How are they to assist us in detecting and fixing our errors, (and vice versa) in our pursuit of that which is true -- and in our shunning of that which is not?

      4. One ESSENTIAL component of a durable "fix for this problem" has to do with being able to link across national borders, AS WELL AS reaching out to those within our own.

      5. To truly survive, prosper, and flourish, we all need other humans -- many of them.

      6. And, not just to look at them, but TO TALK with them.

      7. We are all integral parts of the "great human communications network."

      8. Therefore, we MUST communicate -- and the more thoroughly and efficiently we can engage in effective communications processes, the better off we WILL ALL undeniably become

      9. ESPECIALLY, IF WE USE THEM TO EXCHANGE GOOD WILL

      10. THUS: WE HAVE YET ANOTHER KEY REASON THAT THE INTERNET IS SUCH A MARVELOUS ACHIEVEMENT -- for, we have never, ever had a better chance to optimize our communication-power!

      11.  AND LANGUAGE IS HOW WE USE THAT POWER

      Respectfully,
      David Nelson

P.S.  If I am mistaken or incomplete in my rationale (always a risk), I would appreciate knowing so.  The goal is not perfection, just the pursuit of it.  Please comment, below, if so moved.  I am listening with an eager and open mind.

9/21/12 -- FINAL SPACE SHUTTLE BAY AREA OVERFLIGHT!!

      Friday, 21 September 2012

      PURPOSE

To bring to your attention a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see (and photograph) the spectacle of a space shuttle being ferried over the Bay Area for the last time, ever -- see it this morning -- in person or on live news coverage.

      DISCUSSION

      1.  Here is a great NASA article, by Pete Crow -- full of details and backstory AND a live flight tracker so you can view the actual flight path (but not in real time, it seems).   I have included a link directly to the tracker, as a hopeful short-cut for you.

      2.  Here's a New York Times article describing the Shuttle's final tour over California, today.

      3.  Here's a KRON 4 News report, dated yesterday -- an excerpt is included below -- though flight times may change -- get live updates from the television.

      • "(BCN)--The Space Shuttle Endeavor is scheduled to make a once-in-a-lifetime flight over the Bay Area to the excitement of space exploration fans.
      • The shuttle, which will piggyback on a specially modified Boeing 747, is set to make a low-altitude pass on Friday over an area near the Golden Gate Bridge at approximately 8:30 a.m., creating an epic moment for the thousands of space enthusiasts, photographers and others expected to come out to watch.
      • The shuttle will be on its final flight as it heads south to Los Angeles, where it will be placed on permanent display at the California Science Center.
      • By about 9:30 a.m., the Endeavor is scheduled make a pass as low as 1,500 feet above the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field in Mountain View."

      SCAM ALERT! "Work-From-Home" Scam

      1.  9/21/12 - Update:  Computer security remains a major point of criminal entry into private lives -- creating much personal havoc and destruction and social productivity loss.  It still seems that not everyone believes they can better their lives without ruining others.  They are changing the way we have to deal with our "Internet miracle."   So be it.

A foremost recommendation is to change our daily routines.
It is becoming imperative to check on-line bank and credit accounts,
EVERY DAY (or more), so that criminal activity can be detected promptly and dealt with.
Sooner is always better in this case.

Two other blog articles, here, have touched on the subject of computer/financial security, as follows:
      2.  First published: 2/12/12 -- Editor's Note --  The below article is, by far, the most popular one on this blog.  As long as demand remains so high, I will keep it near the top of the "bulletin board."  I hope it is doing as much good as it seems to be doing.

      THE STORY
      1.  Purpose.  This posting is to caution you about a MALICIOUS email that has been circulating for quite a while -- on which evidence is now CONCLUSIVE that this is much worse than a hoax.  You should be wary -- for you stand to be harmed!

      2.  Background. Over the last few months, versions of this highly "suspicious" email have reached me, identical to the examples contained in this "Internet Patrol" site article, which evaluates the exact version of the email I received.

THE MALICIOUS MATERIAL IS VERY WELL DONE AND LOOKS ENTIRELY GENUINE -- AND EVEN CLEVERLY TAILORS ITSELF TO YOUR CITY . (e.g., "Rebecca Schwartz, a mom from Antioch, CA says....")

      3.  Reviews of this suspicious EMAIL-TYPE, by the reputable fact-checking site, Snopes.com, produces over 100 different versions of this money-stealing ATTACK on victims.  Apparently, this vicious scheme works well enough for others to copy in order to victimize the unwary.

      4.  What should you do about this?  It's still a sad truth that "what sounds too good to be true," usually isn't true -- and desperation often makes us take chances we shouldn't. (Who isn't greedy about trying to make the most of life?  We just have to be REALISTIC in our expectations -- and keep on fact-checking == BEFORE GRABBING FOR A LIFE-RING THAT TURNS OUT TO BE AN ANCHOR.)

FOR FURTHER "HOAX-Insurance" -- before believing and/or passing along interesting emails, purporting to be factual, it is very important to "fact-check" them.
      • A leading, highly reputable fact-checker website (within the fact-checking industry and the public, at large) is Snopes.com.  They conduct factual analyses -- first showing some of the various ways the suspicious information is presented; then examining them, point-by-point; and then concluding with recommendations as to whether the material is false or true or mixed.
      • Be especially leery if the suspicious material is presented to you "unsigned," (i.e. with no clear indication as to who authored it).  Even if signed, it doesn't hurt to have a habit of checking with Snopes -- can usually be done in just a few minutes.
      • Then, if found to be bad information, you can properly (1) not send the garbage any further or (2) send it along -- WITH a warning of your findings.  The second option is preferable, since this enables others to be served with good and helpful information, should they ever be confronted with the material again (and they probably will be).
